What is the Pillars of Creation?

The "Pillars of Creation" is a photograph captured by the Hubble Space Telescope, depicting elongated formations of elephant trunks of interstellar gas within the Eagle Nebula, located in the Serpens constellation at a distance of approximately 6,500–7,000 light years from Earth. These distinctive features were initially identified by John Charles Duncan in 1920, using photographic plates taken with the Mount Wilson Observatory's 60 inch telescope. They derive their name from the ongoing process of star formation occurring within the gas and dust, alongside the erosion caused by the radiant energy emitted by nearby newly formed stars.

These formations are characterised by their resemblance to elephant trunks and are notable for their role in the creation of new stars. However, they are also subject to erosion from the intense light emitted by nearby stars that have recently undergone formation.

What is the Pillars of Creation composed of?

The columns are crafted from cool molecular hydrogen and dust, undergoing erosion due to photoevaporation caused by the ultraviolet radiation emitted by nearby, hotter stars. The furthest left pillar spans approximately four light-years in length. The finger-like extensions at the clouds' apexes surpass the size of the Solar System, and their visibility is attributed to the shadows cast by evaporating gaseous globules (EGGs), which act as shields for the gas behind them against intense ultraviolet radiation. EGGs serve as nurseries for the formation of new stars, which subsequently emerge from them before being evaporated themselves.

Secure your print today and embark on a captivating voyage through the cosmos, where the mysteries of the Pillars of Creation await to be explored.
